PARTICIPATE - WE DO NOT ASK FOR DONATIONS
It is high time for every one of us to wake up to the warning call given by the scientists and do our bit in tackling the problem of food security of increasing population and while maintaining the resilience of planet earth. Different people and organisations can play a big role in their own space to avert the danger.
-
Governments: They can appreciate the problem and evolve appropriate shifts in policies with proper vision. Governments of different countries can consider the usefulness of different species of palms and promote them on a large scale. For example the governments of east africa where food refugee migration exist can immediately consider the introduction of dollar palm (caryota urens) species to halt migration and to provide a source in inaccessible areas to quench thirst and starvation especially in view of recent covid-19 pandemic threats. The Palm Promoters Society will keep addressing the respective governments of different countries in this regard.
-
Organizations: We welcome, and appreciate if different national and international organisations consider our views and approach to the issues involved, and take it further with improvisations or modifications as deemed fit to local conditions.
-
Researchers: There is wide scope for detailed research into the utility of palms in different regions. Thanks to the many important studies by many scholars. But still there is a lot of scope especially from the point of utility of different palms in different habitat through its sap as a source of food. The departments of reputed universities can encourage research in this area.. Exploration of tissue culture for increased and early yields, extraction of sugar, and alcohol from palm sap instead of sugar cane or sugar beets, role of palm products like sap in building immunity to fight covid like pandemics are few of the relevant topics which need immediate focus of the researchers.
-
Farmers: Can appreciate the edible utilities of palms especially their sap, fruits, tubers as regular and emergency sources of food, and their role in arresting soil erosion, soil amendments, carbon sinking. They can grow palms in large numbers around the field edges, and help themselves, and the environment.
-
Citizens: Citizens can include the appropriate species palms to grow in their homesteads, fields and use their sap, fruits, root tubers as regular and emergency food sources bypassing cultivation of usual food grains, supply chains and thus save carbon emissions. Citizens can self check per capita carbon emissions in their respective and cause plantation of required number of palms either by themselves or through giving incentive to somebody else to offset the carbon footprint. For example a medium sized car user travelling 1000 miles per month is required to cause plantation of around 20 palms to offset his carbon emissions in a year. We will be coming out with an app to enroll willing citizens, and farmers and help in matching their needed activities.
